A9 and Answers.com

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Yesterday, i installed the A9 toolbar on my pc at home, and i’m very pleased with it. The toolbar combines a searchbox with bookmarks, history, a diary in which you can store notes and add comments to websites and site info. Site info will point you to other websites related to the one your reading.
The A9 search combines searching webpages (through google) and images by default and shows the results in two columns. But it also gives you the possibilty to search in other categories such as books (A9 is an Amazon company ;) ), movies yellow pages, your history and bookmarks and also can show you a reference on your search-query.
It’s to complex to explain in a few short sentences. Just take a look yourself! It works very intuitive and helps you organizing your surfingbehaviour.
I also installed the toolbar today at the pc in my office. After signing in i got the same settings, bookmarks and history as at my pc at home! This really is a great feature. With this tool you have access to all your bookmarks, notes etc. independently from where you are or which machin u use.

Another nice website: answer.com. This is not a searchengine in the classic sence, but more a combination of a reference and a searchengine.
Try quering it for ‘podcasting’ for instance. You really get some usefull information and links.

PHP-GTK

Tuesday, March 8th, 2005

Tonight i did some experimenting (yeah, the hello world program…) with PHP-GTK and i think for me as a web-developer that this is really a great opportunity to get involved in developing desktop-applications.

I found this great tutorial from zend that really got me started.

Now i’m looking for some more reading (learning) material. There is a lot of info on the web but for some reason most is in german. There are a few tutorials for beginners but i cannot find a tutorial that takes it one step further.
On Amazon in found one book on the subject, which is written in portugues (or spanish)….

I’ve just mailed the author and am hoping that an english edition is on the way or that he can point me to more resources. If anyone knows other resources on this subject, please let me know!
