Bloggercon podcasting session

Tuesday, November 9th, 2004

The bloggercon podcasting session with Adam Curry is up on IT-Conversations!

It’s not about radio, broadcasting or money. Today, it’s more about partying and having fun. The hits are going to come from the bottom up, from the outside in. And all you need is a computer and a microphone.

update: Is that the microphone making noise or is it Adam’s cigarette lighter, lighting them special cigarettes? ;)

Podcasting University

If you have to explain the whole concept of podcasting to someone them give them this link to Radio X-factor.

The article gives a nice introduction on the subject and the opportunities it creates, and does give links for more detailed information on the subject.

The author and his brother also have their own podcast going: www.radiobrothers.com

Oneclick uploading

Saturday, November 6th, 2004

Last week a customer of mine told me he had to upload the same file at the same time everyday and he did this manually using some ftp-client. He asked me if there was some easier way to do this.
Allthough i’m sure that there are different ftp-clients out there that can handle automated up- and downloads (i have been using the same ws_ftp light client for years and it still works for me, i don’t think the ftp-protocol has changed much the past twenty years), i decided to take another approach.

I don’t know if many people are aware of it, i was not, but windows comes shipped with a ftp-client on board. Just type ftp in a dosbox and your ready to do your ftp’ing! And the great thing is that you can put your commands in a text-file and run those commands with the command ‘ftp textfile.txt’.

So i wrote a small textfile (ftp.txt) for uploading a file:

open yourftphostname.com
yourftpusername
yourftppassword
cd /yourremoteuploaddirectory
mput c:\\thefiletoupload.txt
y
close
bye

And a batch file (upload.bat) that runs ftp with the commands from the text-file:

ftp -s:ftp.txt

Now all you have to do is schedule the upload.bat batch file to run on a certain time every day!

I’ve been looking for possibilities to add events to windows-folders. I found some folder-monitor programs but nothing that really worked for me. What i would like t know if it is possible to add an event to a folder. For instance, if a new file is added to this folder run upload.bat and parse the filename to it, so that the new file is automatically uploaded once its added to that folder.
In combination with for instance dircaster, this could be used by podcasters. Record your show, save it to the podcastfolder on your computer and the rest is done automatcally. That would be nice!

If anybody has any ideas about this, please let me know.

Bussy week

Saturday, November 6th, 2004

Hi Guys, nothing to much happening on my blog last week. I was very bussy at work and it also was a confusing week and i really did not feel like writing anything or linking to iPodder stuf.

It was a confusing week for several reasons.

First of course the outcome of the US elections, Bush is not my man. Maybe you think, what do you care, you’re from Europe. But that’s the strange thing about US elections, the outcome does influence the whole world, so i do have an oppinion about the subject. Anyway, i don’t want to get to much into that.

The other thing was the murder of Theo van Gogh in Amsterdam. He was a writer, columnist, filmmaker etc with a strong oppinion about almost anything and anyone. I was not a big fan, he always started debating people by insulting them bigtime. Anyway, no reason to kill him! I don’t think there are much reasons for killing anyway. He was killed by an extremist moslim, and that shook the country up. Now everybody is reacting in his or hers way. Action is reaction, i’m afraid our liberal country is gonna make a shift to the right. We’ll see, i hope everybody keeps his cool and the politicians will find a way of dealing with this without making this a police-state.

Ok, i’ll hope i can catch up with my blogging here. I want to write more about different kinds of internet technologies and focus a little less on iPodder and Podcasting. Allthough…, all the big names are at BloggerCon today, and i can’t wait till the sessions are online ;)

I’ve got a very slow weekend ahead, tomorow some friends are coming over and we’ll play a boardgame (carcasonne) together, it’ll be fun! And further i’m writing php lessons for a friend of mine that wants to get some real coding done. Writing lessons is really hard but also very nice to do. You have to think everything over from the point of view of the student and you have to realise that the student does not have the knowledge you have.

I wish you all a great weekend!

If the rest of the world could vote in the U.S. Presidential election, John Kerry would win in a landslide. That is the conclusion of an international election conducted by The World Votes.
